Impetus
*What remains to be seen, however, is whether it galvanizes Bin Laden's followers by turning him into a martyr or serves as turning of the page in the war in Afghanistan and gives further impetus to Mr. Obama to bring American troops home.
*Article Title -Bin Laden Is Dead, Obama Says pg.1
*I had a hard time with the word and the whole sentence so a
remade the sentence again switching some words to easier words that meant the
same thing so I think the word impetus means reasons because it looks like Obama
is giving reasons to bring the solders home.
*(Inference)
*Modeled sentence- The high crime rate was the impetus for
the hiring of one hundred new police officers in our city.
*Original sentence- The hot weather rate was the impetus for
the hiring of 30 new employees in the Soak City water park.
Extremists
*Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, publicly criticized the Pakistani military two weeks ago for failing to act against extremists allied to Al Qaeda who shelter in the tribal areas of North Waziristan.
*What I think the word means is extreme & ultra because in the sentence the words criticized for failing to act makes me think the Mike is going to the extreme.
*(Inference)
*Modeled sentence- but then the ultimate goal of these extremists is to take away our right to eat meat.
*Original sentence- even then the all time purpose of these extremists is to take away the right to eat junk food.
Upheaval
*Analysts said Bin Laden's death amounted to a double blow for Al Qaeda, after its sermons of anti-Western violence seemed to be rendered irrelevant by the wave of political upheaval rolling through the Arab word.
*I think the word means "violent change" because its explaining the Bin Laden's death and being violence and the political word.
*(Inference)
*Modeled sentence- if nothing else, all this upheaval had given him back his musical voice.
*Original sentence- If everything else, all this upheaval had not given her back her dancing moves.
Reflection
Many people have herd that
drinking and
driving is dangerous and we shouldn't do it but, do we actually listen? Umm no
not really; I want everyone that reads this to reflect on it because this is a
very important topic that can change your life in a few seconds. I have a
cousin named Adrianna she is 25 years old. Every time there was a party she
would celebrate it by drinking until getting really drunk whom I guess it wasn’t
too bad because the parties were at her house so she didn’t need to drive home.
But after a while when she began to go to bars all the time and would drive
home or the drunk friends driving her home that’s when she was risking it all
the time. Until one night she was in a bar in a happy hour so she was taking
advantage of the deal drinking and drinking nonstop then it was time to go
home. Three friends and she left in one car, she was in the passenger seat they
were all drunk. Driving their way home with a high speed when all of a sudden
the driver couldn’t control the staring wheel and crashed in a pole. The police,
ambulance and helicopter came; the driver did not get hurt the other two in the
back seat got minor injuries but my cousin Adrianna even though she was conscious
her foot was stuck and couldn’t get her out of the car. Two hours past and the only
way to get her out were cutting off her foot so they did and she was the only
one that got to the hospital in the helicopter. She felt all the pain because
she was awake; she had a broken collarbone, arm, rib, both thighs, left foot,
toes, and right leg amputated. It’s been two months now that she can get up by
herself with cruches it’s a real miracle. This made an impact in my life
because it made me think things better and learn things by other experiences not
wait for it to happen to me in order to understand it’s wrong. Especially that
just didn’t happen to a stranger but to my lovely strong cousin.
